How to create video presentations in Slides

It’s now possible to create videos of a presentation in Slides which you can then easily share with a link with others.

How to record a video presentation

Open your Slides document and you will see in the top right-hand corner the recording (Rec) icon. Click on that to record a new video. Click “Record new video”.

This opens the video recorder. It will also open the camera you may have connected and show the camera video in the bottom right-hand corner. Click on the big red record button to start recording.

Then click “Allow”. Note, you can turn the tab audio on and off here.

Recording a video presentation

Use the arrows to navigate through your presentation. There’s a limit of 30 minutes.

You can pause the video at any time by clicking the big red button.

When you have finished, click “Save to Drive”. Note, you can re-record the video from here too.

This will save the video on your Drive.

Once saved, you will see the video recording listed here in the Rec menu. To watch the video just click on the name.

How to sharing the video link

To share the video, click on the video and select “Copy link” which will copy the URL to it.

You can then share that link with those you want to watch, for example, via Gmail, Chat, Classroom.

If you share it in a Google App, such as Gmail, it will check if the recipients have access to the video. If they don’t you will see a pop-up window asking if you want to share it and the type of access you want to give.

Recording a video presentation – Settings

Before recording the video we have a few settings we can change if we want.

How to turn the mic or video on or off

To the left and right of the big red record button, we have the option of turning the mic and video on or off. Below, I’ve turned the camera video off and you can see the video has disappeared.

How to change the microphone or camera

In bottom right-hand corner, we have the video and audio settings.

Here, we can choose a different microphone or a different camera to use if we have them.

How to change the picture-in-picture position

If we choose to include our camera video, we can change the picture-in-picture position to any of the corners of put it in the centre of the screen.

As an example, here I’ve moved the camera video to the top right-hand corner.

How to change the size of the camera video

We can also change the size of the camera video.

How to show the speaker notes while recording a video

We can also choose to open the speaker notes we may have written in the Slides document.

This will open a separate window where we can read see our notes and also control the navigation of the slides.

Where are the video recordings stored?

There are two places we can find the video recordings. The first is within the Slides document under the Rec menu. If there are any recordings, you will see a number showing the number of recordings that there are.

As we saw above, we can see the list of recordings here.

The recordings are stored on our Drive and in the folder “Slides recordings”. By default, it’s created on your My Drive but you can move it.

Inside the folder we’ll see the videos we’ve created.

How to remove a video recording

We can remove a video recording from the “Rec” menu by clicking on the video and selecting “Remove”.

This will check you want ot remove it and also give you the choice of just removing the video from the Rec menu, or also deleting the video from your Drive.

As you can see, it’s a really quick and easy to create a shareable video presentation using Google Slides. If you use Google Drive and the Google apps, it’s great that you can do this without having to leave Google Slides. I’m sure it’s going to be particularly useful for teachers and educators.

One thing that is missing is the ability to edit the videos but maybe that will be added in the future. But for now, it’s a quick way to record videos without any complications.
